Teaching English in China - The Options

Primary Schools

In these schools you would spend most time teaching basic English to classes of around 30-50 students - a lot of time would be spent teaching songs and playing with the kids to make them feel more confident about speaking English. It's a hands on job and Chinese kids will climb all over you - you need a lot of energy for this job!

Middle Schools

Middle Schools are a little more serious - which is not a bad thing at all - you will teach students the basics of conversational English and a lot of the time use learning materials provided by the school. Your role us to get the kids more confident with the language and let them develop a positive attidude toward oral English and it's use.

Universities, Colleges & Technical Colleges

These are more about you and what you can offer students - they want you to follow a structure whether it's your own syllabus or theirs and to be dynamic in your teaching methods. You can normally use music/ video and role play in these situations better as the students are keen to develop! Some of these institions are looking for your specialised skills - things in your cv they are looking for.

Commercial Training Centres

These are centres where highly motivated students are looking to improve their English quickly - usually you will be part of a team that uses language labs, tutorials and salon type classes. Students will be of all ages - it's interesting but can be a little too commercial - not allowing you as much time as you would like to be out of the classroom - it is also the highest paid sector.
